Waste food, lose service

Do you get fed up with people wasting food? You know, the people at the buffet who put way more food on their plate than they eat?

Then you'll love this story.
Family Kicked Out of Buffet Restaurant

DES MOINES, Iowa - Wendy Dershem may think twice before leaving that egg roll on her plate at her next Chinese buffet. The Des Moines woman, her boyfriend and her two children were kicked out of a restaurant last week after management accused her of leaving too much food on her plate.
...
Dershem said she paid her $5.95 fee on Saturday but was abruptly told to leave after eating one plate of food.

Employees said they had been watching her family on previous trips to the restaurant and were fed up with her habits.

"They just take one bite and throw it away," said cashier Lin Huyen. "They take four egg rolls and crab ragoon, take one bite of egg roll and throw the whole plate. That is wasting food."
...
Dragon House manager Kent Cao said his restaurant offers all you can eat buffet, not all you can waste.
...
"Shes done that too many times," Cao said.
...
Bob Oberbillig, an adjunct professor at the Drake Legal Clinic, says the patron would have no legal case against exclusion from a business unless there are other factors such as racial discrimination or mental health issues.

"An establishment can exclude people if they smoke or waste food," he said. "It's still a private business."
Wow!

I have a dream, of restaurants who ask people to leave when they let their children run up and down the aisles, bothering everyone in sight. I say if you want to chat with people while your children run, have them over and go out in the back yard.

We went to a Chinese buffet on Saturday night. It was my second visit to this place and both times the food has been substandard. I hate waste enough to choke down the last 4 bites of the eggroll but wouldn't blame someone for tossing the bland, soggy, tasteless thing. Unlike these people, however, I will choose not to return.

Funny.

Down south, back home ;)... there is a chinese buffet that has several posted signs that wasted food will be weighed and added to your bill.

Makes you think twice about getting over zealous during plate grazing.

Kristi Noser,

As a mother who has children who run through the aisle in restaurants...

Sometimes there's really not anything the parents can do about that, except go to family-friendly restaurants. And, if you're going to family-friendly restaurants and are still complaining about it, then you really need to consider your choice in the matter.

My children have special needs, and we go to specific restaurants (the employees of which are now quite familiar with us) who are perfectly willing to accomadate us, even going so far as to "free up" a waitress to help keep our kids out of trouble...and we tip well enough to make it worth their while.

Well. Stephanie, with all due respect, I don't agree with you about the statement that there's nothing parents can do. That's the same as saying that there's nothing parents can do about their children stealing from a store. Children will do what you let them. If you let them run the aisles in a public place, that is what they will want to do. Special needs or not. My younger son was very active as a small child, but disrupting people's dinner was never acceptable, or allowed. I'm glad you have found a place that accomodates your children. I'm glad you tip accordingly. That is a good thing.
