But he could regain conservatives' confidence...

...if he really follows through with his promise to do this.
Bush Renews Threat to Veto War Spending

WASHINGTON - President Bush on Friday renewed his threat to veto any war and hurricane spending bill that exceeds his request.

"Congress has got to be wise about how they spend the people's money," Bush said at Frager's Hardware on Capitol Hill. "They've got to make sure the supplemental comes to me at a rate that I'll accept."

The president says he'll veto any bill exceeding his $92.2 billion spending request for the war in Iraq and hurricane relief plus an additional $2.3 billion to prepare for a possible bird flu pandemic. The Senate on Thursday passed a $109 billion supplemental spending bill, but it includes add-ons, making it some $14 billion more expensive than Bush has said he is willing to accept.
Honestly, if he actually vetoes this, his approval rating in my book will jump over 70%. He must veto this bill!!

It may be defense spending, but let's be honest; if we can't afford to be in Iraq, then we have to either cut other programs to compensate for the cost of being there or we have to get out. We can't just spend money that doesn't exist.

Oh, but wait...that's what we've been doing....

Anonymous Anonymous declared,

so how exactly are we planning to recover from this?

Blogger Joey declared,

How are we going to recover from what? The deficit? Republicans' incompetence with spending? Bush's nonexistent approval ratings? There are a lot of things to recover from....

Regarding the deficit, we recover by cutting spending. You can't dig yourself out of a deficit when you keep spending. I strongly believe the Dept. of Education should be cut. We did just fine without it until 26 years ago. I think we can do just fine without it now. A truly federal government should allow the states to have control. If you want to fund education from the federal level, then give the money to the states and trust them with it, but don't create a department that squanders roughly 30% of that money (I think it's actually more, but I'm being generously low since I don't have the numbers in front of me). If we cut the Dept. of Education, it would cut an immense amount of administrative costs.

In any event, we've got to start cutting to recover from the deficit.

If you're wondering how we recover from Republicans' spending incompetence, we oust them in the primaries, or we put so much pressure on them that they have to get their act together. I'd say a 25% approval rating (for Congress) is a sure way to pressure them to get their act together. Now we can only hope they respond. If they don't, they'll lose the majority, and deservedly so.

If you want to know how Bush recovers from his deficit, well, it's pretty much the same as above. Quit signing every spending increase that Congress passes. Veto it. If he actually carries through with his threat, I'll be ecstatic.

If you want to know how we recover from the fact that I'm posting my thoughts online for anyone to see, I really don't know. It's going to take a lot of therapy for the poor souls who are affected....
