More Americans pro-life

If you believe pollsters...
NEW YORK – A Gallup Poll released Friday found that 51 percent of Americans now call themselves pro-life rather than pro-choice on the issue of abortion, the first time a majority gave that answer in the 15 years that Gallup has asked the question.
What's equally relevant, though, is the stance Americans are taking on the legality of abortion, which is much different than their personal views.
The new survey showed that Americans remained deeply divided on the legality of abortion — with 23 percent saying it should be illegal in all circumstances, 22 percent saying it should be legal under any circumstances, and 53 percent saying it should be legal only under certain circumstances.
This summary from the president of Planned Parenthood is probably a fairly accurate assessment of where we're at.
"The terms pro-choice and pro-life no longer define the parameters of the debate, witnessed by the fact that in the Gallup Poll, a majority of people say they are both pro-life and that abortion should be legal."

And thus it's a meaningless and pointless debate that shouldn't be discussed any further. It's been 30 years since the decision was made allowing it and it's time that people realize it's not going to change.

That is a big change. Not long ago, the percentages were pro-choice.

At the very least this shows that anti-abortion is not an American value as we have been told by the right. Too many conservatives assume that everybody agrees with them on everything before the conversation starts.

In the midst of such a polarized debate, there is a need for conversation. We have had enough condemnation, and propaganda. This will all be decided over 100 million cups of coffee.until then, let's all do our best to bless the young women who are so scared that they don't know who to listen to.

No matter your position, I think a majority of people are interested in reducing the number of abortions. There is no reason we cannot do that. In a half a century, we have educated people enough that a large majority of people wear safety belts when they drive. Education to prevent abortion, and the situation that leads to it should be able to be reduced too.

Why do you quote someone from Planned Parenthood, the nations largest abortion provider and not someone in the prolife movement? Just curious.

I quoted Planned Parenthood's president because I agreed with her assessment. I would have quoted it if it were a pro-lifer who said it too. What she said is true: most people are pro-life on a personal level and pro-choice at a legal level.

And Stephen, I wonder how much impact education has had on seat belt usage versus the fines that are now imposed for not wearing them.
