We're not "Americans" in Michigan public schools

I thought this was a joke when I read the headline.

It's not.
the Michigan Department of Education is attempting to ban the "America" and "American" from our public schools.
Wow.

H/T: Peter.

What on earth are they going to say? What words will they use?Pretty soon we won't be able to utter a thing for fear of offending someone. Sick

As my mind tried to figure out what possible justifiable reason there would be for this I concluded it had to do with the geographical distinction of America (2 continents consisting of North and South America) versus the polital distinction of the US of A. Certainly, it couldn't be an entire state department of education trying to separate itself from any connection with this nation. So, I read the article and was relieved to see that the reason WAS for the geographical distinction. As you know, Joey, I tried to make you children aware of those distinctions. However, it was and still is globally understood that when you say you're from "America" you are abbreviating the "United State of America", not just denoting the hemisphere in which you abide.

My grand conclusion. There are too many lawyers getting involved in public school policy in Michigan!

I understand that too. However, when you demand that the textbooks say "United States" rather than "United States of America," you're taking it 8 steps too far. That's more than simply geographical.
